The climate is mild, with its medium temperatures reaching 14º C (57º F) in the Winter and 20º C (68º F) in the Summer.
BRIEF ISLAND STORIES :
Small piece of land in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Corvo did not awake the immediate interest of those who colonized Flores . The first attempt, took place in the beginning of the XVI Century, by Antão Vaz, from Terceira , who ended up abandoning the island. The same thing happened to the following group, also from Terceira , lead by the Barcelos' brothers. Later on, in the mid XVI century, Gonçalo de Sousa sends a few slaves to pasteur his cattle, followed, years later, by Flores inhabitants.
The growth of the population obligates, in the beginning of XVII century, for a resident priest – until that time, people were baptized once a year, when a priest visited the island, after Easter – and in the XVIII and XIX centuries, American whale ships recruited their crew and harpoon men, wanted by their courage. Emigration started in the XIX century, especially to USA , a phenomenon that took place until the beginning of the 80s, with a break between 1925 and 1955.
Today, Corvo, equipped with an airport and a harbor, breaks the almost complete isolation that went on for centuries. It participates, in the relativity of its size, in the progress of the Azores, having for an economic support the production of dairy products as well as tourism.
PLACES TO VISIT:
Vila Nova do Corvo , the most beautiful moment is when you can calmly listen to the island's “old wise men” tell stories about the island, in any corner of the village. If that is not possible, then visit the church Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, with the Flemish image of XVI century. Pay close attention to the typical wooden door locks on the houses, a mechanism which forgets safety, which is actually unnecessary on the land of tranquility.
Steep coast , mountains and hills, being Monte Grosso (770 m) the highest one, several tips and islets give the north side a rare charm.
Caldeirão – situated at Monte Grosso – huge crater of the ancient volcano which originated the island, with 300m deep and 3400m wide. On the bottom, covered with two calm lagoons, emerge small islands that the people's imagination associates with the Azores .
On the Southwest side, two very curious rocky formations emerge. They are called Cavaleiro and Marco.
